Remembering the Short List

New Year's Eve 2011

I can almost taste that day, the memory is so clear.  Waking up nauseous and worried about Steve’s early-morning spinal tap, I found refuge in a quiet space at 4:30 AM while my mind raced and reeled, grasping for solid ground on which to build.  By the light of my trusty lap top, I did what I do when I’m scared or confused or frustrated: I made a list.  The list is as true today as is was two years ago.  Truer, if truth can grow more true.  Maybe our minds can just grow more in love with truth.  If that’s the case, then I love this list more than I ever have.

The results of that day weren’t what we hoped, but it stands in my memory as one of the most miraculous and – dare I say – magical dates that Steve and I have ever lived out together.  You won’t see ‘lumbar puncture’ on this season’s slate of dates on The Bachelor, but I will tell you that facing giants together is fiercely romantic.  So on this, our anniversary week, I’m remembering that January day with nothing but joy.  Nothing but joy.

Here’s my list.

  • Life is hard
  • Life is short
  • and it’s not fair
  • But God is good
  • In every day
  • in all ways
  • And all He does
  • is beautiful
  • Beautiful is His strategy
  • It’s His character
  • Everything on His to-do list for Tuesday
  • is Beautiful
  • Though this day includes a waiting room
  • a spinal tap
  • and weighty results
  • Even in this day
  • This stormy, spinning day
  • Life is
  • Love is
  • God is
  • Beautiful

This I know.

Believing for a lovely day,

Bo

What are you facing today?  I hope you have a really good list.  Because some things in life really are certain and sure, even when everything else is stormy.  Count on it.  It’s truer than true.

Loved your blog. I am not great with words – you are so gifted to be able to put into words what is going on inside. However, your gift enables me to say, “Yeah, that’s right! Yeah, that’s exactly how I feel, or think.” So, keep on putting into words what God puts in your heart, and we ALL will benefit from it. Have a great Monday!

Thank you, Bo, for you ongoing tranparency.
    My transparency is this:
Facing shoulder surgery in a week. And the results of the MRI of my lumbar back with the neurologist along with another visit to a urologist for an atonic bladder this week.
I have made my lists too and I have chosen to declare my “crafted” version of 2 Chronicles 20. I will share that with you here or privately – if you wish – just ask.
As a result, I am looking forward to what God will do with this and with me. Jesus already saved me – and I choose to walk that out with Him at my side and with you and the army I have around me at my side. The battle belongs to Him.
    Love Susie
