I’d like to introduce you to some of my favorite friends, John and Linda. Though they live on the other side of our country (in beautiful Maine), we are tightly joined by our shared battle with ALS. John has been fighting it twice as long as Steve.
ALS has cost John so many of the things he loves, including hiking and camping with Linda and their sons. But I’ve never known people who complain less. They are aggressively optimistic and faith-filled and they put all their strength into gratitude for what they have rather than spending a bunch of time mourning what they’ve lost (check out John’s t-shirt!) They do not ask for sympathy or favors, they just quietly adjust their lives and make them work…they choose to be happy with what they have.
But John’s friends got together on Sunday and proved that if a man has friends, he has all the muscle he needs to climb mountains. ( This photo makes me cry every time I see it.)
Linda says her friends prove that “love is verb.”
I wonder what might happen if all of us looked around today and loaned our muscle to another person’s mountain? I just bet this world could get really beautiful, really fast.
