I have a wonderful friend.

She is beautiful.

And funny.

And smart.

And so full of life and joy and just….oh, goodness…what’s the word?  Electricity.

She is a successful attorney.

She is fluent in many languages.

She has worked with many politicians on the domestic violence issue and has been an influential voice in that important conversation.

She is the wonderful mom to three beautiful children who dearly love her.

She has enjoyed a career that has taken her all over the world.

She is learning to read the Bible in Hebrew.

She is a fantastic speaker.

However, she has many health problems.

She spent the first years of her life in a children’s hospital and had many operations.

She has no use of her neck.

She has serious heart problems.

She is unable to do many of the things that you and I do every day with no problem – like reach the glasses on the top shelves.

The medical community might label my friend Botched Abortion, because that is how she came to be.

But I would much rather call her Beauty from Ashes, because that is what she is.

I’m not going to tell you how to vote, but the thought of a world where my friend would have been left to die instead of being given care is absolutely incomprehensible to me.

I know the economy is a mess.  The war has been long and clearly complicated.  People are nervous and frustrated.  Honestly?  So am I.

But when any leader – black or white – tells me that my friend does not deserve the chance to become a brilliant attorney and a loving mom because she had the audacity to to survive an abortion?  That leader will not have my vote.

Not now, not ever.

Am I a one-issue voter?  Hmm…I guess I might be, though I only just realized it now.

But the thing is: I know my friend.  And when our elections begin to be about platforms and personality rather than actual people….we lose.  We all lose.

Believing that America has not lost her capacity to love,

Bo

  1. Very compelling! I agree wholeheartedly.

  2. Amen. Your blog is an influential tool…glad to see it used for influence toward righteousness and those who can’t speak yet. keep it up!

  3. I have another amazing friend, who also is a successful lawyer, a national-level speaker, and a happy mom of 5.

Her name’s Rebekah, and she was conceived in rape.

At the time, here mom wanted to abort her. Although, since it was illegal way-back-then, she went ahead and decided to go through with the pregancy and give her up for adoption. This baby girl was adopted into a Jewish family. At 18 years old, she learned the “dark” history of her birth . . . which led to her destiny.

In the process of learning more about her “conception in rape” beginning, she came to know the One who was truly “In the Beginning” with her . . . The One, Jesus.

After surrendering her future to Christ, God opened the way for Rebekah to devote her life to fight for the precious lives of other people, who are perhaps “unwanted” by some . . . but desperately loved by others.

    Little people.
    Who can’t yet vote.

But I can vote for them. And fast for them. And pray.

I’m glad my friend had the chance to be born in the USA.
    She has an awesome life.

(And I’m not just a one-issue voter. But usually the people who have a concept of killing the lives of precious innocent US civilians in the name of choice disagree with me on nearly every other issue.)

No matter what, God will still be on the throne, come Wednesday. And may His kingdom come.

    Ann

  4. Interesting day today. Not a lot of comments on this very controversial topic, but I got a lot of emails and phone calls. It’s like people feel very passionately about the issue, but are a little bit afraid to say so. I understand. I sat in front of my computer screen a good long while before I pushed “publish”. What is it that keeps us so careful when life is at stake? Whatever it is, it’s brought us to where we are as a country right now.

I’m feeling a change in my spirit as this day unfolds. I’ve been praying for the election and for the leaders of our land; congress and the president and the supreme court, etc…and I feel my focus steadily shifting to prayer for revival in our nation. I feel that it’s almost time to bypass the media and the government and pray directly for the moms and dads and teenagers and college students and school kids and business leaders…for their hearts to turn and for God to be glorified in our country from the ground up. May millions of love-filled God-followers rise up with one heart and voice and become what they believe.

  5. Amen, Amen to your comment my sister!
Jesus didn’t need good press and a moral government to fulfill his calling on this earth and bring His Kingdom to lepers, prostitutes, sinners, the suffering and the broken hearted…and neither do we. A moral government would be nice, but a grassroots revival of hearts passionate to serve the needy and destitute like Christ did would be much, much nicer. I believe we’re seeing that very thing begin in very interesting and surprising ways across our country (and even hemisphere), and I look forward very much to seeing how God’s going to use humble hearts in the coming years. That holds so much more intrigue for me than the outcome of this darn election!

  6. So sorry, friends, about the horribly misarranged comments…I only just now figured out the time zone setting on WordPress and while I am enjoying a certain measure of victorious triumph…I also realize that the comments are terribly out of order. All will be right with the world tomorrow. The blog world at least.
